MCPHERSON — Caroline J. Hunter, 82, passed away on Aug. 6, 2016, with family by her side at The Cedars in McPherson.
Born on Oct. 3, 1933, in Osborne, she was the daughter of William Edward and Ruth Fern (Rigg) Hake. She graduated from Norton Community High School. On June 12, 1955, Caroline married her college sweetheart, Donald Dean Hunter, in Norton. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1973. In 1974, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central Missouri State University. In 1976, she received a Master’s Degree from Fort Hays State University, majoring in Speech-Language Pathology. She was a Speech-Language Pathologist for McPherson USD 418.
Some of Caroline’s honors, activities, and committees over the years have included: early implementation of classroom inclusion, member of the first School Improvement Team, and Lincoln Elementary School Teacher of the Year 1988-89. She attended three Speech/Language National Conventions, and yearly school committees.
Mrs. Hunter was a member of First United Methodist Church in McPherson. Professional organizations included: NEA, American Speech/Language Association, Phi Kappa Phi, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Survivors include her son, Mark Hunter and wife Sandy of McPherson; two brothers, Bill Hake and wife Mary of Gardner, Mont., and John Hake and wife Sharon of Olathe; and two sisters, Linda Christensen of Oceanside, Calif., and Marvel Pierce and husband Danny of Tracy, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Major Donald D. Hunter; and sister, Betty Gearhart.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, at First United Methodist Church in McPherson with the Rev. Darren Frazier and the Rev. Harold Nelson officiating. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Stockham Family Funeral Home.
