ELLINWOOD — Catherine Rose (Esfeld) Birzer, 95, passed away Feb. 9th, 2020 at Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born to parents Fred and Francis (Monger) Esfeld on Nov. 23rd, 1924 in Great Bend, Kan. A lifetime Ellinwood area resident she graduated from Great Bend High School in 1942 and later married Lawrence Birzer at Saint Rose Church in Great Bend, Kan. on Apr. 27th, 1948. He passed away Feb. 17th, 2011. Catherine worked at Fuzzy’s Drive-In and at Dierolf’s and Huschka’s liquor stores.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin (Twila) Birzer, Great Bend, Kan. and Steve (Brenda) Birzer, Ellinwood, Kan.; two daughters, Jane (Bob) Carr, Edmond, Okla. and Connie (Keith) Miller, Great Bend, Kan. Other survivors include 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by husband, Lawrence Birzer; granddaughter, Patricia Taber; four brothers, Fritz, Joe, George, and Dutch; and one sister, Agatha.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Thurs., Feb. 13th at St. Joseph Church with Father Terrance Klein officiating. Burial will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 12th from noon to 5 p.m. with parish rosary at 3 p.m. and family present from 3-5 p.m. at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood. Vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church that evening. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church or Ellinwood Hospital Auxiliary in care of Minnis Chapel, PO Box 246, Ellinwood, KS 67526.
