NEWTON — Darrel L. Unruh, 74, of Newton, passed away on Wednesday Nov. 25, 2015. He was born to Harvey and Geneva Unruh in Great Bend. He grew up with his two brothers, Donovan and Dennis, on a farm outside of Pawnee Rock. He graduated from Pawnee Rock High School in 1959, then went to General Motors School in Kansas City. After completion of the program, he married Wanda Mausolf on Sept. 14, 1960, at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. He then went to work as a mechanic.
Their family grew with the addition of their son, Bryan. In 1965, Darrel went to work as a maintenance mechanic at Hesston Corporation. During his employment there, he attended night school at Wichita State University, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration. Before leaving Hesston Corporation in 1980, he had worked his way up to become an Industrial Engineer with the corporation.
Darrel worked for Gates Lear Jet, and then later in his career for Goodwill Industries. He retired from Goodwill Industries in December of 2007 as Vice President of Industrial Services.
Mr. Unruh was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Wichita Manufacturing Association. He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially snow skiing, water skiing and windsurfing. Darrel kept his friends and family on the road through the years with his mechanic know-how.
Darrel is predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Geneva Unruh. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Unruh; son, Bryan and wife Carol Unruh; brothers, Donovan and wife Naomi Unruh, Dennis and wife Kathy Unruh; grandchildren Rebekah and husband Jordan Farris, Anna, Kendra and Joel Unruh; Great-grandson, Zachary Unruh; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 at Christ Lutheran Church of Wichita and will be followed by a luncheon with the family at the church. Burial will take place on at 11 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Cemetery located in Albert. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
