LACROSSE — Dennis W. Schaffer, 75, died July 20, 2016, at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse. Born March 8, 1941, in Hays he was the son of Vincent R. and Olinda (Obholz) Schaffer. In 1959, he graduated from Schoenchen High School. On June 6, 1964, he married Betty Ann Klaus at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Liebenthal. She preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 2001. A lifelong resident of Rush County he along with his wife owned and operated Schaffer E-Z Mart Convenience Store in La Crosse for 32 years before his retirement.
Mr. Schaffer served in the Kansas Army National Guard. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2970, both in La Crosse.
Survivors include his companion, Sandy Herrman of Hays; one son, Calvin Schaffer (Sherri), of Wichita; three daughters, Gale Karlin (Brian), of Hays, LeAnn Woods of Garden City, and Sarah Burk (Shelby), of La Crosse; 13 grandchildren, Taylor Schaffer, Nicholas Schaffer, Bree Pashman, Amanda Bird (Shawn), Dalton Fischer, Paige Fischer, Trent Karlin, Savanah Woods, Abby Woods, Jasey Woods, Sierra Burk, Brooklyn Burk, Gage Burk; two great-grandchildren, Addison Karlin, and Camden Gomez; five brothers, Joseph Schaffer, Kenneth Schaffer, and Paul Schaffer, all of California, Irvin Schaffer of Mountain Home, Ark., and Charles Schaffer of La Crosse; and three sisters, Mary Gariepy of Cheney, Gladys Haugaard of Ellsworth, and Virginia Dreiling of Hays. He was awaiting the birth of his third great grandchild, Ryker Bird. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Virgil Schaffer, and Jerry Schaffer.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse with Father Matthew Kumi officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at St Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Church visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:20 p.m. on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal or the La Crosse High School Football Team.
