SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Dorothy A. Garvey, 86, of San Francisco, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on June 1, 2023. She was born in Great Bend, Kan. on April 1, 1937. Dorothy is the beloved daughter of Meryl Godfrey and Murel Atteberry and was raised by her grandmother Libby Applegate. She was the eldest of her four siblings, Robert Atteberry, Doris Atteberry, Larry Atteberry and step brothers Richard and Donnie Atteberry. Dorothy graduated from Great Bend High School in 1955. Dorothy left Great Bend, Kan., at the age of 18 with her husband Edward Garvey and moved to San Francisco, Calif. She resided in Eureka Valley, Most Holy Redeemer neighborhood till the day until she passed. She supported the Eureka Valley Twilight Baseball League for many years after her son Sean’s passing.
She loved her job working at the IRS as a Secretary for 25 years and retired at the age of 75. She was family oriented, loving, and supportive with a witty sense of humor and loved sharing her wisdom and history with her family. She sacrificed everything for her children, always had an open ear or shoulder when you needed. She loved having garage sales and recycling things to help the world be a better place. She always said “She was Dorothy from Kansas” and that beings she was born on April fool’s day, “she had been a fool all of her life.” Dorothy had many friends and extended family; she was well loved in the Eureka Valley Neighborhood, was an avid traveler who also loved to dance.
Dorothy is survived by her loving children Sheryl Kusnik (Garry), Gail Garvey, and Edward Garvey (Melchie) and is preceded by her loving son Sean Garvey whom passed in 1985 and her infant daughter Dorothy Garvey who passed at birth. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Jason, Crystal, Christopher, Melissa, Justina, Sean, Cullen, Kaeli and Cayden; and her six great grandchildren, Natalie, Autumn, Jaelyn, Livia, Anthony and Richie.
Friends may visit with family on Friday, June 16th from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and are also invited to attend the services at 6:30 p.m. at Duggan’s Funeral Service – The Duggan Welch Famliy, 3434 17th Street in San Francisco. Charitable donations in her memory may be sent to the charity of your choice. Private interment is to take place at a later date. Mom loved her family intensely. She was the Matriarch of the family that kept everyone, and everything together. She will be greatly missed.
