WICHITA — Dr. Thomas D. Van Winkle, 88, died April 28 at Life Care Center, Wichita. He was born Jan. 18, 1923, at Great Bend, the son of Albert and M. Ruth (McGinty) Van Winkle. He married Ann Wesley on Aug. 20, 1967, at Wichita. A Wichita resident most of his life, coming from Seward, he was a dedicated chiropractor for 39 years.

He was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. When he was disabled in the war for stepping on a line mine, his foot was fused and after 17 surgeries he almost lost his leg. They told him he would never work again, but he carried on to pursue a profession where he could give back with the limitations he had. In order to build his practice he had to work at Beech Aircraft during the night while trying to build his practice during the day. He also had three young children to support, and he finally achieved his goal and helped many people in the process. He was always very proud of that.

His most prized love was the love of his country.

Mr. Van Winkle was a member of Church of the Magdalen, Wichita, and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; four daughters, Jan Orr and husband Dick, Kathryn Van Winkle-Patyk and husband Russ, and Cheryl Tepe and husband Fred, all of Wichita, and Lisa Walling and husband Marvin of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Alice Latas of Dodge City, and Arlene Deighton of Greensburg; one brother, Jim Van Winkle and wife Karolyn of Winfield; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Ruth Hobbs; one son, Thomas E. Van Winkle; and one sister, Polly Taylor.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Seward, with Father Rene Guesnier officiating. Interment will be at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Seward, with military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
