Dr. Walter Curtis Curt Niederee 1930-2016

WESTON, Mo. — Dr. Walter Curtis “Curt” Niederee, 85, of Weston, Mo., passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital, in Kansas City, Mo. Curt was born Nov. 23, 1930 in Larned, to Walter Louis and Lois Jane (Lyon) Niederee. He was a 1948 graduate of Larned High School; began undergraduate studies at Kansas University; and graduated from medical school at Creighton University in 1956. Curt practiced surgery and medicine in Great Bend for 29 years; moving to Chicago in 1989; and finally to Weston in 1995. He married Carol Jean Gabbert on Dec. 24, 1997 in Weston.
He was a devoted member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and, in 2010, was the recipient of the Bishop’s Recognition Award, for his work in the diocese. Curt was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the AMA, and served on The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. He was an avid pilot, and outdoorsman, who enjoyed spending time with his sons hunting. Curt also served in the past as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 249 of Weston.
Curt is survived by: his first wife Joyce Niederee of Great Bend; five sons Michael Niederee and his wife Laura of Winfield, David Niederee and his wife Cindy of Derby, William Niederee and his wife Robin of Great Bend, Thomas Niederee and his wife Laurie of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mark Niederee and his wife Myra of Wichita; four step children Valija Hirter and her husband Dennis of St. Joseph, Mo., Allison Roberts and her husband Pat of Weston, Andrea Bradley and her husband Stuart of Warrensburg, Mo., and Gene Winter of Warrensburg; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carol; his sister Jan Joseph; and a grandson Heath Niederee.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 26, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Weston. A visitation will be from 5:30 – 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, Mo. A second visitation will be from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Friday evening, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Private family interment will be on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Larned Cemetery, in Larned. The family suggests contributions be given to: Holy Family School Endowment or Dominican Sisters in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
