Duayne Pete Charles 1926-2016

GREAT BEND – Duayne ‘Pete’ Charles, 90, died July 6, 2016 at his home in Great Bend.
He was born June 23, 1926 at Heizer, Kansas, the son of William E. and Beta (Trauer) Charles.
He was employed by Myers Water Well Service, and the Great Bend Fire Department from 1950 to 1968, earning the rank as captain. Mr. Charles was a lifetime Great Bend resident. He was a 1st Sgt. in the United States Army, serving in World War II, 10th Mountain Division, and in Korea, as a combat engineer. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3111, Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Rich Charles, Great Bend; Duayne Charles, Jr., Emporia; a sister, Alberta Hurd, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a granddaughter, Karen Jean Burt, Middleburg, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Dalton Burt and Logan Burt.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen Jean Charles, and three sisters, Virginia Steiner, Matilda Bennet and JoAnn Charles.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
