Dwayne Brunson, 27, of Great Bend, died March 18, 2018. He was born Aug. 28, 1990 in Queens, New York, the son of Tonya Fredrick and Dexter Brunson. He attended Benjamin N Cardozo High School in Bayside, NY and graduated in 2010, where he was a member of the basketball team. While playing for Cardozo, he was Co- MVP Team as well as 2nd Team All-Queens in the ’08-’09 season. Queens Player of the Year, Cardozo Team MVP, and 1st Team All-Queens and was 4th Team All-New York State in the ’09-’10 season. He helped lead his team to the City Championship Final ’09-’10 at Madison Square Garden. He averaged a double-double both years at Cardozo. 14.8 points and 10.2 rebounds as a junior and 18.7 and 12.2 as a senior. He was recruited to play basketball for Barton Community College from 2010-2012. While at Barton, he was 2nd Team All-Conference ‘12 and 2nd Team All Region ‘12 and led the team in rebounds and block shots. He continued his education and his basketball career at Fort Hays State University from 2012-2014. ’13 season he was awarded MIAA All-First Team and NABC All-District Central Second Team. His final season of basketball in ’14 he was awarded MIAA All-Second Team. He also scored over 1,000 points in his two years at FHSU. He was planning on returning to Fort Hays State University to complete his Bachelor’s Degree.
He is survived by his wife, Mallory Stein of Great Bend and his sons Mikkel, 7 and Kyvan, 3. He is also survived by his legal guardians Kermerlin Richards (aunt) and Mattie Richards (grandmother); parents Tonya Fredrick and Dexter Brunson of Queens.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bethea’s Funeral and Cremations in Wichita. The funeral will be held on March 31st, 2018 at 11 a.m., with a viewing from 8:30-10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, 101 S Pioneer, Lyons, KS 67554. A memorial will take place on April 14th in New York, with a benefit basketball game to follow the memorial. Time and place will be announced on the Youcaring profile. The family requests donations for the Dwayne Brunson Memorial Fund to help with funeral costs. There is also a Youcaring online account set up, Dwayne Brunson Memorial. Anything left after final expenses will provide a savings for his sons.
