Elizabeth "Betty" Heitschmidt 1924-2015

HOLYROOD — Elizabeth E. “Betty” Heitschmidt, 91, passed away Dec. 30, 2015. Born Jan. 24, 1924, on a farm near Geneseo, she was the daughter of  William and Lillian Allen Bailey. She graduated from Ellsworth High School and then attended Fort Hays State. She began a teaching career in a one room school north of Holyrood. She taught many years as a teacher and substitute in the Holyrood school system. On Aug. 2, 1945, she married Marvin Heitschmidt in Ellsworth. He passed away Oct. 9, 1991. For 19 years, Elizabeth owned and operated Betty’s dry good store in Holyrood.
Mrs. Heitschmidt was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Holyrood. She was a 4-H leader in Ellsworth County for 20 years and was also a charter member of the Ellsworth County Health Care Foundation.
Survivors include a son, Art (Linda) Heitschmidt of Wichita; a grandson, Darren (Julie) Heitschmidt of Lindsborg; a granddaughter, Darcie Wilson (Mike) of Wichita; five great-grandchildren, Brett, Addie, Ty Heitschmidt, Brynn, and Avery Wilson; and a brother, Keith Bailey of Ellsworth.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Martin Luther Bailey.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Holyrood with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Holyrood, Plum Creek Plaza, or the Halstead Health and Rehab in care of the funeral home.
