Elizabeth M. Betty Burns 1924-2012


GREAT BEND — Elizabeth M. “Betty” Burns, 88, died  May 11, 2012 at the Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
She was born April 5, 1924 at Quinter, Kansas, the only daughter of Charles and Evadne (Milroy) Graham.
Mrs. Burns was a Cadet Nurse during World War II. She was a 1946 graduate of the St. Rose School of Nursing.
She married Clarence J. Burns Nov. 4, 1947 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend.
She was an OB nurse at St. Rose Hospital and Central Kansas Medical Center helping hundreds of new mothers throughout her career. She retired in 1991. She was also a farm wife, working beside her husband, Clarence, on the family farm.
Mrs. Burns was a Great Bend resident since 1943 coming from Quinter, Kansas.
She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and the Altar Society, Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence J. Burns, of the home; a son, Tom Burns and his wife Kay, Great Bend; two daughters, Linda White and her husband Steve, Great Bend; Barbara Davenport and her husband Harlan, Great Bend; three brothers, Leroy Graham, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Eugene Graham, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Wendell Graham, Lawrence; seven grandchildren: Douglas McNett and his wife Jennifer, Larned; Jennifer Strecker and her husband Eric, Towanda; Kristoffer White, Tulsa, Okla.; Chad White, Fort Worth, Texas; Erin VanCamp and her husband Chad, Olathe; Allison Burns, Garden City; Logan Burns, Manhattan; eight great-grandchildren, Ross McNett, Reed McNett, Ella McNett, Emma McNett, Jackson Strecker, Kennedy Strecker, Avery VanCamp and Aaden VanCamp.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Graham and Sherman Graham.
An Altar Society Rosary is scheduled at 4 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home. A Vigil Service will start at 7 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Celebrant Father Don Bedore. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Barton County 4-H Holding Board Scholarship Fund or Sister Aquinata Penka Nursing Scholarship Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
