NEWTON — Evelyn M. Dirks, 99, died Tuesday (June 5, 2018) at the Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born on the family farm near Pawnee Rock, Kan. on July 14, 1918, the daughter of Jacob A. and Carrie Ratzlaff Dirks.
Evelyn would later graduate from Bethel College in North Newton and continued to live in the Newton area.
She went to work at the Axtell Clinic doing shorthand for the doctors. Later she was a bookkeeper at Bethel Clinic then went to Prairie View where again Evelyn was doing shorthand and clerical work. She met many lifelong friends while working at Prairie View. Prior to retiring Evelyn worked for an oil company in their office.
Evelyn had been a member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock and Koerner Heights Church in Newton. She loved to dance as well as having a love for dogs. Evelyn also enjoyed singing and playing the piano.
She survived by several nieces and nephews. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and three sisters.
Services will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday (June 14th) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m., Friday (June 15th) at the Bergthal Mennonite Church Cemetery near Pawnee Rock, Kan. A memorial has been established with the Bergthal Mennonite Church Cemetery, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
