HOISINGTON — Evelyn V. Hammerschmidt, 71, died Feb. 25, 2017, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born Jan. 3, 1946, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Adolph and Mary (Demel) Gerritzen. In 1964, she graduated from Hoisington High School. On Oct. 22, 1982, she married Elwyn Dean Hammerschmidt in Great Bend. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2011. A lifetime Hoisington resident, she worked for Fuller Brush for 39 years, retiring in 2012.
Mrs. Hammerschmidt was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela Oberle and husband James of Pawnee Rock; a son, Michael Spainhoward of Great Bend; a grandson, Michael Oberle of Goodland; two great-grandsons, Zane and Liam; a stepdaughter, Sheila Barnett and husband Tim of Goodland; a brother, Robert Gerritzen and wife Erma of Hoisington; a sister, Theresa Gerritzen of Hays; a sister-in-law, Joyce Gerritzen of Marietta, Ohio; three nieces, Rose Mary Saunders and husband Steve of Wichita, Patricia Droste of Hutchinson, and Wendy Carpenter and husband Craig of Marietta, Ohio; and a nephew, Matthew Gerritzen of Hoisington. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Mary Kaiser and JoAnn Brown; a brother, Jerome Gerritzen; and two nephews, Scott Gerritzen and William Gerritzen.
Vigil with rosary led by the Altar Society will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, with family to receive friends from 5-6:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hoisington Ambulance or Golden Belt Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
