Florence Ethel Jonas 1923 - 2015

HOISINGTON — Ethel Jonas, 91, died April 20, 2015, at Hays Medical Center in Hay. Born on June 1, 1923, in Barton County near Susank, she was the second child of Lora Retta (Gardner) Jonas and Edmund “Edd” G. Jonas. Her brother, Walter was born in 1920. He passed away in 2005.


The family moved to Hoisington in 1926 where Edd worked as a blacksmith for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. They bought a house on west Broadway and Ethel lived there continuously for the next 88 years. She graduated from Hoisington High School. She worked on the flat iron mangle at the Hoisington Suburban Laundry for 30 years, retiring in 1992, and cared for her elderly parents. She moved to Cherry Village Residential Living Center in 2013. As a lifetime resident of Hoisington, she enjoyed a close-knit circle of friends and relatives.


Ms. Jonas was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hoisington.
Survivors include two nieces, Nancy Jonas Stichman and husband Dan of Lancaster, Calif., and Janetha Jonas Sander and husband Wayne of North Stonington, Conn.; one great-niece; three great-nephews; cousins, Edith Gardner Grogan and Brenda Perkins, both of Garland, Texas, and Betty Smith of Hoisington; and other extended family members.


A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at Hillcrest Cemetery, with the Rev. Joshua Leu presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Cherry Village or ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in care of the funeral home.
