GREAT BEND -- Harlie Edwin Nutting, 99, died Sept. 7, 2012 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Feb. 2, 1913 at Aberdeen, Idaho, he was the son of John W. and Mary Ellen (Esery) Sisler. At the age of four, he was adopted by Lewis and Emma (Lynn) Nutting and moved to Southwest Mo. On March 18, 1934, he married Helen Luticia Sanders at Rural Stafford County. She died Jan. 30, 2005.
Mr. Nutting started farming as a teenager with a team of horses. He was a farmer and ranch foreman for W. A. Cross Ranch for 25 years. In 2002, he moved to Great Bend from Lewis. He was a member of First Assembly of God, Kinsley, Kansas. He wrote music and started writing poetry at age 95. He loved farming, ranching, being outdoors, playing pool, dominoes, gospel music, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, antique tool collecting, mechanic work, and University of Kansas basketball. Above all else, he loved the Lord and studying the Bible.
Survivors include three sons: Harlie Nutting, Jr. of Temple, Texas; Larry Nutting and wife Dorothy of Great Bend; Michael Nutting and wife Carla of Crosby, Texas; two daughters: Eleanor M. Smith and husband Dick of Poway, Calif.; Rita Giles of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada; nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers: John Sisler, Marion Sisler, Richard Alford Sisler, Charlie Sisler, and an infant brother; and four sisters: Nellie Bardell, Maggie Hill, Mary McClellan, and Lula E. Metz, and two grandchildren: Sherie Lynn Tillman and Matthew Towner.
Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Wayne Cemetery in Lewis with Pastor Dwight Dozier officiating. Interment will be at Wayne Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home.
