ELLINWOOD — Iris Nadine Burns, 95, died July 13 at Good Samaritan Home in Lyons. Born Sept. 16, 1917 at Oketo, she was the daughter of Sidney R. and Bessie (Hedge) Suggett. A 1936 graduate of Marysville High School, she worked as a clerk at Orth’s and Lovell’s Market and Umphenour Grocery and as a packager at Beatrice Bakery Company, all of Beatrice, Neb. She also worked as a baker at Tri-County High School in DeWitt, Neb. On Sept. 16, 1948, she wed John William Burns at Eureka Springs Ark. He died Sept. 15, 1997. She became an Ellinwood resident 13 years ago, coming from Plymouth, Neb. where she called home for 41 years.
Survivors include her son, Charles (Linda) Burns, Mazeppa, Mo.; her daughter, Linda (Rob) Penner, Ellinwood, and her sister-in-law, Merle Weyer, Hesston; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Lloyd, Randall and Lyle Suggett.
Graveside service will be Tuesday, July 16 at 10 a.m. in the Veteran’s Section of Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Beatrice, Neb. The family will be available for calling Monday, July 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Kimple Funeral Home at 113 North Main, Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to Ellinwood Public School and Library Foundation.
