Jackie Lee “Jack” Messick, 86, of Great Bend, Kan., passed away Oct. 14, 2020 at Greenwood County Hospital, Eureka, Kan. He was born June 6, 1934 in Sterling, Kan., the son of C. O. “Jack” and Dora Hughbanks Messick. Jack had resided in Great Bend since 1990, formerly of Raymond, Kan. He graduated from Raymond High School, with the class of 1952, and later went on to graduate from Brown Mackie Business College in Salina, Kan. Jack was a chief gauger for Jayhawk Pipeline for 38 years, and owner of Jack Messick Income Tax Service for 40 years.
He was a member of Raymond Baptist Church, Raymond; member of Elks Lodge #1127 of Great Bend; member of Masonic Lodge #171 of Sterling; former Chase/Raymond USD 401 school board member; and was Mayor of Raymond for 18 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, bookkeeping, doing taxes, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.
On June 3, 1957, Jack was united in marriage with Margaret Taylor Doll in Chase. They later divorced. On June 8, 1990, Jack was united in marriage with Leila Pearce in Alden, Kan. She preceded him in death on May 16, 2020. He is also preceded in death by his parents; son, William “Bo” Messick; daughter, Jackie Pryce; brother, Bud Messick; and grandson, Kent Messick. Jack is survived by his two sons, Fred Messick and wife Debbie of Valley Center, Kan. and Jay Miller and wife Karol of Great Bend, Kan.; daughter, Cathy Coon and husband Danny of Eureka, Kan.; two sisters, Bobbie Shultz and husband Darrel of Ellinwood, Kan., and Kay Fore and husband John of Lyons, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020 at Raymond Baptist Church, Raymond with Pastor Matt Hendricks officiating. Burial will be at Raymond Hilltop Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020 at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present. Memorials may be given to Raymond Baptist Church Steeple Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
