Jacob Leo Stremel, 88, passed away Aug. 26, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kan. He was born April 23, 1935, in Greenbush, Kan. to Jacob John and Anna (Westhoff) Stremel. He married Margaret (Peggy) Heckele April 9, 1956, in Ellinwood, Kan.
Jake, a longtime resident of Great Bend, worked in the oilfield and was a welder for O’Neill Tank and McDonald Tank and Equipment, and was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose.
Jake was a true outdoorsman, his favorite pastime was hunting and fishing. He competed in trap shooting competitions at the local and national level. And he supported gun rights as a member of the NRA. He worked with regional and national federations to support conservation and hunting rights
Survivors include his wife Peggy Stremel of the home; two daughters, Susan Read (George) of Great Bend, and Lisa Richmeier (Greg) of Great Bend; four grandchildren, John Read, Abbey Read, Shayla Richmeier and Bryce Richmeier; and two great grandchildren, Hannah Caton and Scarlett Wilcox. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Stremel, and sister, Mary Catherine Nyland.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Bryant Funeral Home, with a Vigil and Rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
