RUSSELL — James August “Jim” Schremmer, 83, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.
Jim was born on Aug. 19, 1932, in Hoisington, the son of August R. and Adelia G. (Depiesse) Schremmer. He grew up in the Russell area and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1950. In 1952 he was drafted into the military and joined the United States Navy. He fought in the Korean war and after serving his country was honorably discharged in 1956.
After returning back home from the war, he met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Mary K. “Kitty” Stehwein on Feb. 4, 1959. From this union Jim and Kitty were blessed with seven children: Jim, Bob, Liz, Dave, Joe, Kathi and Chuck. The family moved to and lived in several different places before settling back down in Russell, in 1980. He worked as a manager with Firestone for 15 years. He also was owner and operator of Kitty’s Bargain Barn.
He was a longtime member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell. He was al-so a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6240, American Legion Post No. 99, and was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating on the lake, watching the Denver Broncos and Kansas State University Wildcat Football, as well as St. Louis Cardinals Baseball. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving family include his children, Jim Schremmer of Tucson, Arizona, Bob Schremmer and wife Melissa of Russell, Dave Schremmer and wife Catie of Omaha, Nebraska, Joe Schremmer and wife Robyn of Salina, Kathi Jeroue and husband Kelly of Twin Falls, Idaho, Chuck Schremmer and wife Cheryl of Salina; siblings Pat Proksch, Lois Klug, Karen Bishop, Ron Schremmer, Bill Schremmer and Eugene Schremmer, all of Hoisington; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kitty on April 18, 2010, daughter Liz Schremmer and brother Earl Schremmer.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate Jim’s life was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, at the St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell, with Father Michael Elan and James Grennan officiating. The vigil and rosary was held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. Mary Cemetery Fund and sent in care of the mortuary.
