HOISINGTON — James Monroe “Jim” Cornwell, Sr., died December 2, 2021, at his home in Hoisington. He was born August 24, 1938, in Sharon, Kansas, the son of Newton M. and Esther S. (Gillig) Cornwell. Jim was a 1956 graduate of Kiowa High School, Kiowa, Kansas.
On June 14, 1958 he married Janette L. “Jan” Harris in Kiowa, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2007.
A longtime Hoisington resident, Jim worked for the Telephone Company for over 40 years, retiring as a Network Technician. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, the Hoisington and Great Bend Archery Clubs, and Hoisington Historical Society.
He is survived by two sons, James Monroe “Bo” Cornwell, Jr. and wife Kim of Mt. Cory, Ohio, and Brett M. Cornwell and wife Crystal of Hollister, Missouri; two daughters, Terri Szendrodi of Hoisington, and Sherri Jackson and husband Danny of Hill City; two brothers, Charles Cronwell of Springdale, Arkansas, and Donald Cornwell of Tijares, New Mexico; a sister-in-law, Asa Cornwell of Springdale, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother, Larry Cornwell.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2021, with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m., at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with Pastor Chris Lehew and Ron Bailey presiding. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa, Kansas.
