James Wallace Jay was born in Girard, Texas the son of Merle and Evelyn Jay. He received a BS degree from Texas Tech in 1947 after serving four years in the Marine Corps during WW2. He received a masters degree in 1954 and an EDS from Emporia State University.

He married Lucibel Bear June 30, 1946. They lived in Texas where they taught until moving to Great Bend in 1961. James taught math at Roosevelt Junior High and math and computers at Great Bend High School.

James was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Lucy; a brother and sister; parents; and one infant daughter. He is survived by two children, Sharon (Joseph) Olson of Indianapolis, Ind. and Mike (Kris) Jay of Santa Barbara, Calif.; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; and one brother.

A memorial service will be held on Nov. 22, 2019 at the First Christian Church, 5230 Broadway Avenue, Great Bend at 10 a.m.
