GREAT BEND — John Frank Werner, 94, died Dec. 11, 2013 at Great Bend Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 27, 1919 in Odin, he was the son of John Baptist and Regina Philomena (Schmidt) Werner. On Oct. 5, 1952, he married Leona Lauren Ambers at the Viking Lutheran Country Church in North Dakota. A longtime Great Bend resident, he worked for the Barton County Road and Bridge Department and later served as a long term employee of the City of Great Bend Street Department. He also worked for the Arkansas Sand and Gravel.
Mr. Werner was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II with the 63rd Infantry Division, Seventh Army, which received commendation for cracking the Siegfried Line. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Werner, of the home; three daughters, Karen Steffan and her husband Jerry, Great Bend; Cheri Hayen and Meri Werner, both of Manhattan; six sisters, Loretta Rutherford, Wichita; Irene Werner, Chandler, Ariz.; Frances Prosser and Annie Klug, both of Odin; Margie Carey, Rockaway, N.J.; and Mary Gilliam, Sturgis, Ky.; a brother, Anthony “Tony” Werner, Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Craig Jon Werner; three brothers, Robert Werner, infant Raymond Werner, and Rudolph “Rudy” Werner; and a sister, Theresa Miller.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. James A. Strasen officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday at Bryant Funeral Home.
