John H. McMullen 1929 - 2016

John H. McMullen, 86, passed away on March 3, 2016, at his home in Great Bend. Born on May 25, 1929, at Great Bend, he was the son of James Alexander and Viola (Bittner) McMullen. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he was employed for Western Power and Light Company in Great Bend as Power Plant Operator for 45 years prior to his retirement. He also officiated softball for the Great Bend City Recreation leagues for about eight years. He loved all kinds of shooting sports (shotgun, rifle, pistol, and archery).   
Mr. McMullen served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, on active duty from Jan. 11, 1951, to Dec. 28, 1952, and then transferred to the United States Army Reserves until his honorable discharge on Jan. 22, 1957.  He was a Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association.   
Survivors include his wife, Gail G. McMullen of Great Bend; three sons, James McMullen and his wife, Lisa of Ellinwood, and David McMullen and John “Mike” McMullen, both of Great Bend; three daughters, Sharon Witt and her husband, Emory, of Salina, Chris Shectmans and her husband, Ira, of Joplin, Mo., and Deb Lear and her husband, Tom, of Dewey, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Patricia Heilfrich.
According to his wishes, cremation has been chosen. There will be no viewing or services at this time. The family has requested that memorials may be designated to the Great Bend Fire Department EMS.
