LARNED — John Richard Grant died on Oct. 20  at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital. He was born in Mitchell, S.D. He was a graduate of Plankington High School in Plankington, S.D. Self-employed, his work included farming, milk delivery routes, feedlot work, and a brief stint at the Larned State Hospital. He had a life-long interest in finding new uses for items. Even long after he retired he continued to tear down old houses and barns to salvage the lumber.
Mr. Grant was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include his children Rita O’Gwin and husband David of Larned, John Grant and wife Monica of Adams Okla., Leonard Grant and wife Cindy of Larned, Evelyn Grant and husband Rick Morse of Portland, Ore., Pauline Hampton and husband David of Larned, Margaret Grant of Larned, Lisa Grant and husband Tom Magliery of Vancouver, B.C., Doris Grant of Orem, Utah, Marlene Lira and husband Joe of Kansas City, and Shannon Nichol and husband Eric of Topeka; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and siblings Russell Grant of Macon Mo., and Bessie Kruse of Wessington Springs, S.D. He was preceded in death by, his beloved wife of 57 years, Roberta Grant; his mother and father, Evelyn and John Grant; his step-mother Doris Grant; his siblings Lorraine Grant-Nash and Harry Alfred Grant; and grandson John Zachary Grant.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Burial will be at the Larned Cemetery, with military graveside rites. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the St. Jude-Children’s Research Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.
