HOISINGTON — Kenneth I. Sellens, 94, died Oct. 23, 2011 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood.
He was born January 14, 1917 at Russell, the son of Henry and Florette (Overholt) Sellens.
He married Berdena B. Bangerter May 28, 1938 at Hoisington. She died Jan. 19, 2010. He worked at the Hoisington Star Meat Market in the early 1940s, then was a pumper in the oilfield and retired as parts and service manager after many years for Murdy Motors, Hoisington.
Mr. Sellens was a lifetime Hoisington resident until the 2001 tornado when he moved to Great Bend. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hoisington. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He volunteered for the Hoisington police auxiliary, was a champion blue rock competitor and an avid bowler and taught hunter safety and auto mechanics at Barton County Community College.
During his retirement, he filled it as an avid sportsman, hunter and helped farm with his longtime friend, Ray Bradshaw.
Surviviors include a son, Jim Sellens and wife Sharon, Wasilla, Alaska; four daughters, Judy Harmon and husband Roger, Round Rock, Texas; Janice Westrum and husband Gordon, Monument, Colo.; Jolene Boys and husband Mike, Great Bend; and Demarise Jayne Klir and husband Steven, Denton, Texas; a brother, Howard Sellens, Hoisington; and sisters, Marilu Delano, McCook, Neb.; Beula Earnest, Attica; and Carolyn Huffman, Attica; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at First United Methodist Church in Hoisington with
Officiant The Reverend Kris Brinlee. Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home; and on 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Interment will be at the Hoisington Cemetery.
