GORHAM — LaVernne Johnson, 76, died March 27 at the Golden Living Center in Wilson. Born on Nov. 21, 1936, in Rooks County, she was the daughter of Vernon and Leah (Mayo) Matheson. She grew up in the Natoma area and graduated from Natoma High School in 1954. On June 23, 1954 she married to Chester Webster. Later she was married to Carl Johnson. Both Chester and Carl preceded her in death. She worked as a cook at Irene’s Café in Russell.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter Doris Steinert of St. John; son Henry D. Webster of Shawnee, Okla.; two brothers, Verneal Matheson of Holcomb, and Calvin Matheson of Iola; two sisters, Verna Munk of Gorham and Mary Logsdon of Ponca City, Okla.; one grandchild, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Brown.
A graveside celebration will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Mt. Hermon Cemetery near Paradise with Pastor Sharon Thomas officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the graveside service. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Memorials may be given to the Russell Food Pantry in care of the mortuary.
