LAWRENCE — Mass of Christian burial for Leon A. Romme, 77, Lawrence will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2023, St. John’s Catholic Church in Lawrence.  Military graveside inurnment will be held at a later date in Great Bend, Kan. Leon passed peacefully March 1, 2023, at LMH Health in Lawrence.

Leon was born Sept. 2, 1945, in Victoria, Kan., the son of Ray and Magdalena (Kuhn) Romme.

Leon began working for EMR, Inc. as a Project Manager in 1991 in Lawrence until the company transferred him to Fort Worth, Texas in 1997. Upon his retirement in 2016 Leon and Jolene moved back to Lawrence to be close to family. 

Leon was proud of his service as a United States Marine and served during Vietnam. He was his son’s and their friend’s Biggest Fan. He was extremely proud that his two sons had the opportunity to play for the storied Lawrence High Football program.

He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed NASCAR, playing cards and dominos, wood working and yardwork. He was very proud of his lawn!

His passion for dogs was evident with his three Boxers (Buster, Gordy and Deuce) which gave him joy. He was a reader and loved and practiced his Catholic Faith.

Leon married Jolene Steinbacher on Sept. 18, 1971, in Great Bend, Kan. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Bradley and Brett Romme both of Lawrence, Kan.; his sister Dolores Schmeidler of Hays, Kan.; several brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Paul Schmidtberger who helped raise him; his brothers, Robert, Thomas and Donald; his nephews, Steven Schmidtberger and Thomas Romme, Jr. and several brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s.

Leon loved his immediate family, his extended family, and his friends. There is nothing he would not do for them when someone was in need.

The family will say a rosary at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary with the visitation to follow from 5-7 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. John’s Catholic Church or to Wounded Warrior Project and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary 120 W. 13th St. Lawrence, KS  66044.
