Lillian Marie Gates, 97, died July 5 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born Aug. 18, 1914 at Bloomington, Ind., the daughter of John and Laura (Baxter) Wampler.
She married Walter Henry Gates on May 26, 1938 at Kingman.  He died Oct. 13, 1989. She was food service manager for Barton Community College until her retirement.
Mrs. Gates was a Great Bend resident for 70 years, coming from Pawnee Rock. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend; and the Audubon Society.
Survivors include, one son, Michael W. Gates of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Diana C. Frohardt and husband Louis of Salina and Wendy C. Gates of Great Bend; one sister, Marian Jackson of Rialto, Calif.; six grandchildren, Mark Gates and wife Kim, Julie Gates, Doug Frohardt, Laura Ketterman and husband Bobby, Aaron Gates, and Brooke Mingenback and husband Matthew; and nine great-grandchildren, Alexandra Gates, John-Mark Gates, Sarah Gates, Alexis Frohardt, Cort Frohardt, Evan Frohardt, Kylie Ketterman, Tayler Ketterman and Georgia Lily Mingenback. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow Wampler and Johnny Wampler; and two sisters, Viola King and Dorothy Unruh.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home with The Reverend Lennie Maxwell officiating. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the DAV, in care of Bryant Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
