STERLING — Mary Ann Clayton, 91, died Sept. 5, 2015, at Mantey Heights Nursing Home in Grand Junction, Colo. Born Aug. 15, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of John and Josephine Karmajek Marmul. A resident of Sterling for 60 years, having lived the past year and a half in Grand Junction, Colo., she worked in the cafeteria and in housekeeping at Sterling College for over 20 years. On Sept. 20, 1954, she married Joe R. Clayton Sr. in Arkansas. He died on Jan. 30, 2014.
Survivors include two sons, John Clayton of Ellinwood, and Joe R. Clayton Jr. of Grand Junction, Colo.; one daughter, Elaine Kapelanski of West Bloomfield, Mich.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood with Father Terrance Klein officiating. Burial will be at the Raymond Hilltop Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, with vigil service at 7 p.m., at Birzer Funeral Home in Sterling. Memorials are suggested to Hope West Hospice in Grand Junction, Colo., or the Sterling Public Library, in care of the funeral home.
