La CROSSE — Mary Helen Jones, 95, of La Crosse, died Nov. 12 at the Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care facility in La Crosse. She was born Jan. 10, 1915, at Pfeifer, the daughter of Frank and Barbara (Urban) Schaffer. She married Fred T. Jones Sr. on Aug. 11, 1949. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1984. She was a resident of La Crosse since 1983, moving there from rural Otis.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse.

She was gifted as a caretaker: of her brothers, husband, family, and all who came to her home. Her prodigious green thumb contributed to the bountiful and delicious food always on offer at her table. She loved to make music and dance.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Miller and her husband, Virgel Miller, La Crosse, and Nila Hartman and her husband, Nelson, of Fort Collins. Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Maureen Jones of Dodge City; two brothers, Francis Schaffer and his wife, Alverna, and Raymond Schaffer and his wife, Mary Lou, all of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Ludwina Schaffer of La Crosse; six grandchildren, Cynthia Hartman, Clark Hartman, Kay Boyd, Renee Nicholson, Teresa Miller and Fred T. Jones III; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Fred T. Jones Jr., and three brothers, Clarence Schaffer, Aloysius Schaffer and John Schaffer.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, with Father Rene Labrador officiating. Interment will be at the Pleasantdale Cemetery in rural Otis. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, or to the Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, La Crosse.
