HUTCHINSON — Mary J. Birzer, 98, passed away on Dec. 28, at Hospice House. Born Dec. 4, 1916, in Odin, she was the daughter of Alois F. and Regina (Hermann) Prosser. She attended school at Holy Family School in Odin. On May 17, 1938, she married Martin Birzer in Odin. He passed away on Dec. 3, 2003. Mary retired in 1980 after 24 years at Dillons.
Mrs. Birzer was a member of Harvest House, St. Veronica Circle, Altar Society, and Teamsters Union.
Survivors include two sons, Glenn Birzer of Hutchinson, and Gary Birzer and wife Margaret of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Barbara Kostner and Diane McKinney both of Lakewood, Colo.; a sister, Helen Kaiser of Hoisington; a sister-in-law, Roberta Prosser of Hoisington; 10 grandchildren, Daniel Moree, Troy Moree, Jerry Birzer, Brian Birzer, Alex Birzer, Gary Allen Birzer, Pamela Millison, William Kostner, Adam Birzer, and Rachel Cohen-Birzer; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin Birzer; and two grandsons, Timothy Moree, and Anthony Moree.
Parish Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Friday, all at The Church of the Holy Cross. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Church of the Holy Cross or Hospice House in care of the funeral home.
