Mary Jane Dickens, 86, died March 28 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Oct. 29, 1926, in Ozark, Mo., she was the daughter of Luther Alexander and Ruby Mildred (Nix) Young. On Oct. 12, 1946, she married Preston Maynard Dickens Jr. in Pratt. He died on Jan. 29, 2002. A Great Bend resident since 1953, coming from Pratt and Ozark, Mo., she owned and operated Mary Jane’s Sewing Center for 30 years, retiring in 2004. She loved reading her Bible daily, working find-a-word puzzles, playing Bingo at Cherry Village and watching KU basketball.
Mrs. Dickens was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and CKMC Auxiliary, both of Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Dickens of Great Bend and Ron Dickens and his wife Merry of Adel, Iowa; one daughter, Cindy Dolechek and her husband Don of Albert; two sisters, Irma Ruth Stockstill of Bolivar, Mo., and Ella Mae Young of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; one brother, Luther Young of Springfield, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Young; and one sister, Betty Lou Royal.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Great bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 1 to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., today at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the First Southern Baptist Church in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
