LARNED — Mary Lou Smith, 96, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2022 at Country Living in Larned. 

She was born Nov. 7, 1925 to Walter B and Maud Romig Rumsey. 

On Dec. 1, 1944 she married Virgil John Smith. Virgil died May 27, 1977. 

Mary Lou was a lifelong area resident, a farm wife and homemaker. She was an elder and active member of the Presbyterian Church, PEO Chapter CB, and a Santa Fe Trail Museum Board Member. She was a good cook and enjoyed horseback riding and painting. 

Mary Lou is survived by a son, Richard Vance (Susan) Smith, Larned; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Rumsey, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Walter Rumsey and Reed Rumsey; and her son, John David Smith.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned, with Pastor Bill Stapleton presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Memorials may be given to the Santa Fe Trail Center or the First Presbyterian Church in care of Beckwith Mortuary, PO Box 477, Larned, Kansas 67550.
