ELLINWOOD — Maurice Francis Thul, 87, died Jan. 1 at his home in Ellinwood. Born April 16, 1923, in Ellinwood, he was the son of John and Ida Dorothea Mayer Thul. On Feb. 14, 1949, he married Maxine W. Strodtmann in Ellinwood. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, he retired in 1988 after 35 years with the City of Ellinwood, retiring as superintendent of the Water and Sewer Department. He was a volunteer fireman for 28 years and for 12 years was the Fire Chief in Ellinwood.

Mr. Thul was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus No. 1187.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Mark Thul and wife Nancy of Great Bend, and Marion Thul and wife Sara of McPherson; a daughter, Maureen Bohlander and husband Steve of Ottawa; a son-in-law, Bob Stucky and wife Cheryl of Moundridge; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marla Stucky; four brothers, Norbert, Wilbur, Arthur and Raynal; and two sisters, Bernice Faimon and Dorothy Chiles.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellinwood with Father Charles Mazouch officiating. Altar Society rosary and K of C rosary were Monday at Kimple Funeral Home.Burial will be at the Lakin-Commanche Cemetery in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph’s School Living Legacy Fund or the Ellinwood Fire Department, in care of the funeral home.
