LYONS — Maxine Idell Battershell, 95, died May 22 at Good Samaritan Center, Lyons. She was born Jan. 29, 1919, at Larned, to the Rev. Thomas F. and Lelia Goforth Swanson. She graduated from Stafford High School, and from Beauty College in Hutchinson in 1939. She married Lee Howard Battershell on Aug. 12, 1943, at Lyons. He died July 17, 1967. A longtime Lyons resident, formerly of Sterling and Erie, she was owner and operator of Maxine’s Beauty Shop for over 50 years.
Mrs. Battershell was a member of First Christian Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary, both of Lyons.
Survivors include four sons, Lee Howard Jr. and Diane Battershell, and Montie and Kathy Battershell, both of Hutchinson, Bruce and Kristy Battershell, Lyons, and Galen Battershell, Kinsley; one sister, Maurine Hawk, McMinnville, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Douglas M. Battershell; three brothers, Herschel Swanson, Joyce “Swanee” Swanson and Dr. Gene Swanson; and one sister, Marguerite Zimmerman.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 31, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with the Rev. Joel Grizzle officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Reno Co. Hospice or Lyons Good Samaritan Society in care of the funeral home.
