HOISINGTON —Merle Steiner,  81, of Hoisington died Monday, March 3 at Golden Living Center in Wakefield. He was born Nov. 14, 1932 at Odin, the son of Louis and Lenora (Ummel) Steiner.
Merle graduated from Odin High School and was a long time Hoisington resident. He was employed by the City of Hoisington for many years in the public works department and was a full time farmer. Merle was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus both in Hoisington, and enjoyed gardening, tinkering with things, dancing, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.
Merle married Pat Lewis in 1967 at Barton County. She preceded him in death on May 30, 1992. He later married Loyola Meitner in 1997 at Hoisington.
Survivors include his wife, Loyola Steiner of Great Bend; one daughter, Kim Gorton and significant other Ron Cash of Junction City; two step-daughters, Shirley Schugart and husband John of California, and Linda Ruble and husband Larry of Hoisington; three step-sons, Jim Meitner and wife Celeste of Hoisington, Rocky Meitner and wife Connie of Hoisington, and Terry Shearrer and wife Linda of Louisburg; one sister, Mildred Siebert of St. John; three nieces, Alicia Steiner, Tracey Swalley, and Debbie Freund; two nephews, Alan Siebert, and Scott Siebert; twelve grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dean Steiner, and a step-daughter, Debbie Plank.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington with Father Anselm Eke as celebrant. Burial will follow at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, March 6 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. with a vigil service followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or Golden Living Center both in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.  Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.nicholsonrickefh.net.
