LACROSSE —  Monica Unrein, 93, died April 15 at Via Christi Care Center in Hays. Born May 4, 1919 at the Schaffer family farm in rural Rush
County, she was the daughter of Michael and Magdalena (Herrman) Schaffer. On Nov. 21, 1939, she married John Unrein at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Schoenchen. He preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 2000. A lifetime Rush County resident, she owned and operated Unrein Liquor Store in La Crosse for many years.
Mrs. Unrein was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in La Crosse. She was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and St. Michael’s Altar Society, both of La Crosse.
Survivors include one son, Leslie James Unrein of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Carol Jean Schaben of Independence, Mo., and Paula Kay Schuckman of Wichita; three sisters, Ludwina Haselhorst of Hays, Frances Urban of Great Bend and Mary Schaffer of Wichita; three grandchildren, Patti Bryant, Michael Unrein, John Unrein; six great-grandchildren, Thomas Brent Haskell, Blake Michael Unrein, Brett Raymond Unrein, Ethan John Unrein, Sara Grace Unrein and Katherine Elizabeth Unrein; and one step-great-grandchild, Andy Downs. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Vincent Schaffer, Joe Schaffer and Mike Schaffer; four sisters, Applonia Moeder, Bertha Moeder, Martina Werth, and Annie Price; and one infant sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Chapel at Via Christie Village Care Center, 2225 Canterbury Road in Hays. Burial will be at the La Crosse City Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street.  Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, at Via Christi Village Care Center in Hays. Memorials have been suggested to St. Michael’s Altar Society in La Crosse, in care of the funeral home. Condolences can be sent via e-mail to clinesmortuary@eaglecom.net
