CLAFLIN —Patricia Mae “Patty” Smith, 73, died Oct. 25 at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan. She was born March 24, 1941 in Emporia,the daughter of Wm. C. and Velma (Brown) Phillips. Patty graduated from Claflin High School in 1959 and then attended Fort Hays State College Nursing School.  She later graduated from the Academy of Beauty in Great Bend and then taught classes there. She had Patty’s Beauty Salon, which she ran for many years from her home in Claflin. A longtime resident of Claflin, Patty was also the owner and operator of Brackeen Line Cleaning Inc. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Claflin, the Claflin Order of the Eastern Star and the NRA.
She married Daniel R. Smith on Aug. 19, 1961, in Claflin.  He died Sept. 18, 2000.  She enjoyed traveling the country with her husband, but mostly enjoyed time spent at home with her kids and grandkids.
Survivors include; sons, Darrin Smith and wife Cathy of Wilson, Kyle Smith and wife LaVeneia of Claflin ; daughter, Danette Schartz and husband Ed of Claflin; mother-in-law, Margaret Smith of Great Bend; brother-in-law, Carey Smith of Overland Park; seven grandchildren, Derek Smith, Courtney Swart and husband Martin, Preston Smith, Ross Schartz and wife Sarah, Bethany Schartz, Hillary Schartz and Breanna Schartz; and one great grandchild, Jaxson Schartz and two more on the way.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Claflin, with Rev. Gene Langhofer presiding.  Friends may call 1 to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Claflin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Claflin Ambulance, Barton County Transfer Service, or to the United Methodist Church of Claflin in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.  Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.nicholsonrickefh.net.
