Patricia ‘Pat’ Ellne Karns

LEAWOOD — Patricia ‘Pat’ Ellen Karns, 87, passed away peacefully on Feb. 5, 2026, at her home in Leawood, Kan. She was born on Nov. 21, 1938, in Great Bend, the daughter of John M. and Catherine (Quilty) Russell.

Pat graduated from Great Bend High School in 1956 and earned her degree from the University of Kansas in 1960. Following graduation, she began her career at Arthur Andersen, where she worked as an Executive Secretary for 38 years before retiring in 1998.

Pat was a devoted member of St. Gabriel Parish in Kansas City. On Dec. 20, 1974, she married Clarence Alfred Karns. He preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1986.

Lovingly known as ‘Aunt Patty’, she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom she adored. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Mary Backman. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John ‘Jack’ Russell II, and her sisters, Marilyn Klepper and Joan Daniel.

Pat was an avid traveler, making frequent trips to Ireland, a place close to her heart. She was a proud member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and could often be found celebrating her heritage in the St. Patrick’s Day parade alongside her Hibernian sisters. She was also an avid reader, rarely without a book in hand, and had a lifelong love of learning. Pat had a witty and fun sense of humor and cherished time spent with her many dear friends.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at Great Bend Cemetery with Father Amir Duraisamy presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Community Health – Hospice Homecare, 16201 W. 95th St., Suite 220, Lenexa, KS 66219.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Colonial Oaks Senior Living in Leawood and the staff of Catholic Hospice for their loving care of Pat.

Pat will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
