HUTCHINSON — Phyllis B. Smith, 98, died Sept. 14, 2011 at Thorne Care Center at Wesley Towers.
She was born Sept. 30, 1912 in Hutchinson, the daughter of Burchard Hayes and Estella Alverda Spahr Bowman.
In 1930, she graduated from Pawnee Rock High School. A longtime resident of rural Pawnee Rock, moving to Hutchinson in 1980, she was a homemaker, dedicated farm wife, and loving mother and grandmother. On Jan. 28, 1931 she married John Wendell in Cottonwood Falls. He died on April 2, 1976.
Mrs. Smith was a  member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, 20th Century Club, D.A.R. and United Methodist Women.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Kruckenberg Deckert and husband Andrew, Manhattan; and Sherry Mundhenke and husband Gary, Hutchinson; a son-in-law, Walter Myers, Canon City, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacepine Myers; a son-in-law, Samuel Kruckenberg; and two sisters, Elaine Bowman and Berdine Stansbury.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Pawnee Rock Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Rhaesa officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation in lieu of flowers. Personal condolences may be left at www.elliottmortuary.com.
