Raymond Joseph Berens 1938 - 2011
RUSSELL — Raymond Joseph Berens, 73, died May 23, at his home in Russell.
He was born January 13, 1938, at Walker, Kansas, the son of Herman W. and Sophie (Windholz) Berens.
On Nov. 24, 1962, he married Joan Marie (Pivonka), in Ellinwood. She died April 19, 1999. A lifetime resident of the Russell area, he was a farmer and dairyman until 1990. He moved into Russell in 1998. He loved raising and working with his draft horses and riding horses. He was avid sports fan and loved KU sports and his family.
Mr. Berens attended the Catholic church at Russell, Walker, Victoria and Hays. He was a member of the Russell Knights of Columbus and served in the Kansas National Guard.
Survivors include a son, Joey Berens and wife Angela, Palco; Jana Driscoll and husband Terry, Goddard; Julianne Wolf and husband, Preston, Hays; Jill Hoisington and husband, Bryce; and Joell Griswald and
husband, James, Talala, Okla.; Jacque Coen and husband, John, of West Des Moines, Iowa; his mother, Sophie Berens, Hays; a brother, Delmer Berens, Fullerton, Calif.; three sisters, Sharon Thompson and husband, Olen, Hondo, Texas; Joyce Newell and husband, Stan, Hays; and Mary Kay Schippers and husband, Dan, Victoria; a sister-in-law, Norma Jean Berens, Hays; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; his wife; an infant daughter, Jennifer Marie Berens; and two brothers, Larry Dean Berens and Vernon Berens.
Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, in Victoria. Burial will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery, in Walker. Friends may visit from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, both at Cline’s Mortuary, Victoria. A Class of 1955 rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m., both at the mortuary.
