WICHITA — Richard Allan Herter, 81, passed away in Wichita, Kan. on May 4th, 2026. Born in Great Bend, Kan. on June 10th, 1944 he was the son of Louis J. and Mildred L. (Sinnott) Herter. After high school Richard served in the U.S. Air Force. He married wife Vicki Kipp in Ellinwood on June 11, 1971. Longtime Ellinwood residents Richard and Vicki moved to Wichita in 1980 where he worked for 23 years in the Wichita school district before retiring.

Survivors include wife, Vickie (Kipp) Herter, Wichita, Kan.; children, Randy (Lisa) Dumas, Lyons, Kan. and Tammy Cogdill, Wichita, Kan.; siblings, Jerry (Susan) Herter, Chubbick, Id., Howard Herter, Ellinwood, Kan., Barbara Herter, Wichita, Kan. and Helen (Stuart) Nicholson, Seattle, Wash. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Jason, Jamie, Darus, Courtnee, Shala; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by brothers, John and Jim Herter; son in law, David Cogdill; and sister-in-law Mary Herter.

Cremation has taken place and memorial service will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of Minnis Chapel, PO Box 246, Ellinwood, KS 67526. Condolences to the family may be left at www.minnischapel.org.
