Richard J. "Dick" Stevens

Richard J. "Dick" Stevens, 70, died July 31, 2011, at his home in Great Bend. Born July 17, 1941, in Albuquerque, N.M., he was the son of R.J. and Janet (Ewing) Stevens. On Sept. 13, 1985, he married Marie Smith at Hugoton. She survives. A resident of Great Bend since 1997, coming from Hugoton, he was in law enforcement, and was a meat cutter, having co-owned Dick and Marie’s Venture Foods in Hugoton. He spend his childhood days at the racetrack. He was known for his barbecue brisket and chicken and for his smile. He enjoyed activities with his grandsons, especially hunting and fishing, and took pride in his yard and flower beds.

Mr. Stevens was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and the Knights of Columbus, and was past Grand Knight and 4th Degree Honor Guard.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Rick Stevens and fiancee Tesha Fox of Rio Rancho, N.M.; a daughter, Lyndi Hutchinson and husband Scott of Albuquerque, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Terri Bauer and husband Bret of Pawnee Rock; a sister, Sharon Brown and husband Randy of Gilbert, Ariz.; a stepfather, Robert Carothers of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Bill Smith and wife Helen of Newton; 12 grandchildren, Michael Osborn and wife Nitausha, Jenna Osborn and fiance Chris Corelis, Heather Tucker and husband David, Bryan Osborn and wife Ashley, Trent Bauer and wife Jenni, Chase Bauer and fiancee Trina White, Dalyn Bauer, Chloe Diseker and husband A.J. Bailey, Hailey Stevens, Savannah Stevens, Khloe Stevens, and Madisen Stevens; nine great-grandchildren, Stephon Tucker, Nichole Tucker, Esmeralda Tucker, David Tucker III, Bria Osborn, Avery Osborn, Weiton Bauer, and Johnay Schmidt; and Best Buddy, Bandit. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by an infant brother.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Reginald Urban officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery North. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice or Heartland Cancer Center, in care of the funeral home.
