Sandy Chism, 55, died Jan. 2 at her sister’s home in Great Bend. Born Dec. 7, 1957, at Great Bend, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Dorothy Elizabeth (Allen) Chism.
She married Lane Ikenberry on April 4, 1998, outside Lawrence, under the tallest tree in Kansas. She was a professor of painting and drawing at Tulane University, New Orleans, La. Sandy was a New Orleans resident since 1996, coming from Lawrence.
She was a talented artist throughout her life, creating paintings, sculptures, ceramics, as well as small hand-made objects as gifts for friends and family. She had a tremendous love for animals, and gave a home to many beloved rescue animals or strays that were lucky enough to find her. She supported numerous causes including Plan USA, SPCA, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Alzheimer’s Research.
Survivors include her husband, Lane Ikenberry, of the home; one sister, Shari Chism and her companion Thomas Brown of Great Bend; a stepdaughter, Emily Elston of Salina; a stepson, Myles Ikenberry of Manhattan; one niece, Taryn Mayhew of Southgate, Ky.; great-nephew Dax Mayhew; and three step-grandchildren, Anthony Allen, Dorothy Elston and Douglas Elston.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Dorothy Chism, and one sister, Karen Frisbie.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Bryant Funeral Home with John Grummon, officiant, and Judith McCrea as eulogist. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.
