Sister Ancilla Schawe, 100, died March 25, 2022, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. She was born March 3, 1922, in Windthorst, Kan., the daughter of Herman and Catherine Heeke Schawe. She entered the Dominican Sisters Community in 1943 and pronounced vows in 1945. Sister Ancilla celebrated 75 years of religious profession in 2020.
Sister Ancilla ministered in the nursing profession. She served as supervisor, head nurse, or nursing director in hospitals in Great Bend, Garden City, Larned, and Lamar, Colo., for 33 years. She then received training in pastoral care and ministered at Via Christi–St. Francis in Wichita for 22 years. She retired to the motherhouse in Great Bend in 2004.
Sister Ancilla was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Albert Schawe; and five sisters, Elizabeth Ackerman, Magdalen Ackerman, Virginia Gillogly, Gertrude Rueb, and Pauline Durler. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 1. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 on Saturday, April 2. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.
