Sister Coletta Masterson, 90, died Nov. 29 in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. Born Sept. 19, 1920, in Clonmel, as Magdalen Ellen Masterson, Sister Coletta was the daughter of the late Frank and Theresa Marx Masterson. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community on Aug. 31, 1935, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 17, 1938. She celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 2008.
Sister Coletta began her ministerial life as a teacher of elementary students in parochial schools of Kansas. After completing studies in medical technology, she served in that capacity from 1947 to 1981. Following certification in CPE in 1987, she began her work in pastoral ministry, where she served in Kansas City, Great Bend and Garden City. She took up residence at the motherhouse in 1994.
Sister Coletta is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community, and two sisters, Eileen Quaney and Maxine Boyle, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Sister Coletta’s body was to be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Louis Hoang presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent, 3600 Broadway.
