Sister Malachy Stockemer 1927-2011

Sister Malachy Stockemer, 84, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in the Dominican Sisters convent infirmary in Great Bend.

Born February 26, 1927, in St. Leo as Elizabeth Stockemer, Sister Malachy was the daughter of Peter and Katherine Fischer Stockemer. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in Great Bend on August 23, 1943, and pronounced her first vows August 13, 1947. She celebrated 60 years of religious profession in 2007.

Sister Malachy devoted over 20 years of her ministerial life to the education of elementary parochial students as teacher and principal of schools in Kansas and Colorado. She also served in several aspects of Catholic Social Service including senior services for the Diocese of Dodge City, administration and research in the health care field, and pastoral services in college and parish settings. She spent one year at the Bathurst House of Prayer in Bathurst, Canada. She moved to the Motherhouse in 1998 where she has volunteered in many ways in community service including volunteering at Heartland Cancer Center and local schools.

Sister Malachy is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community, and one sister, Sister Petrona Stockemer of Great Bend.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2011, with the Rev. Peter Fernandez presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 10, 2011. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend. Friends may call at the convent from 8 a.m. Thursday until the time of the wake service and on Friday from 8 a.m. until the time of the funeral.
