Vernon McCord, 79, died Feb. 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 4, 1932, he was the son of J.R. and Martha (Day) McCord. He married Imogene Reeves in Arkansas. They later divorced. On Dec. 20, 1979 he married Betty Wilson in Larned. She survives. A Great Bend resident since 1969, coming from Winfield, he owned and operated McCord’s Service, Inc. He previously taught diesel mechanics in Wichita and worked for C.V. Cale in Great Bend, Federated Flour Mills and G.E. in Winfield. He loved to work, travel and spend time with his family.
Mr. McCord was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include wife, Betty McCord, of the home; three sons, Bill McCord and wife Tanya of Ellinwood, Larry David McCord and wife Diana of Hawthorne, Fla., and Jeffrey McCord and wife Ashlee of Topeka; three daughters, Carolyn Maser and husband Daniel of Great Bend, Shirley Flick and husband Douglas and Andrea Trevino and husband Jessie, Sr., both of Great Bend; two brothers, Robert McCord of Salem, Ark. and Dale McCord of Ash Flat, Ark.; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester McCord and Carroll McCord; and one sister, Ruby McCord.
Memorial Services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday at the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.
