BISON — Virgel D. Miller, 93, a lifelong resident of the Bison, Kansas, area died Monday, July 18, 2016, at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, surrounded by his loving wife of 63 years and three precious daughters after a brief illness. Virgel was born to Milton and Rachel (Beltz) Miller on the family farm on March 27, 1923, which he helped run through his entire life. It was also his favorite place to go tinker around long after he “retired.” He was also a businessman, selling life insurance, houses, and running a gasoline station. He married Kathryn Jones on May 23, 1953. Virgel was a master fixer, loved to play pool was an amazing storyteller, and loved music and dancing.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn, and man’s best friend, Buddy, of La Crosse; three daughters: Kay Boyd (Austin) of Wichita, Renee Nicholson (Leonard) of Hoisington, and Teresa Miller of Wichita; six grandchildren, Melissa Baier of Wichita, Kelsey Beckman of Wichita, Josh Nicholson (Melissa) of Goodland, Jeremy Baier (Jenna) of Bloomington, Ill., Derek Nicholson (Brittni) of Hoisington, and Cameron Beckman (Shannon) of Wichita. He was anxiously awaiting the arrival of two great-grandbabies. He’s also survived by his siblings, Elila Newton of Tulsa, Okla., Everett Miller (Marlene) of Concordia, and Ramona Gunn Loucks of Laguna Beach, Calif.; and many much-cherished nephews, nieces and dear friends. He was preceded in death by one sister, Darlene Burke.
A viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, July 22, with family receiving visitors from 6-7:30 at the Janousek Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the funeral home, followed by interment at the La Crosse City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Walnut Valley Senior Center.
