Walter Adam Mai, 97, died Aug. 14, 2016 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Jan, 11, 1919 at Russell County, he was the son of John Jacob and Katherine Elizabeth “Katie” (Maier) Mai.
He married Florence O. Nuss Oct. 7, 1941 at Russell. She died Dec. 6, 2012. He was a butcher for Thies Packing. Mr. Mai was a Great Bend resident since 1945, coming from Galatia.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Morris-McFadden Post No. 3111, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Allen Mai and wife Julie Mitchell of Houston, Texas, and Daryl Mai and his wife Libby of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Wilmeta Deutsch and her husband Junior of Hoisington; a brother, Howard Mai and his wife Joetta of Russell; seven grandchildren: Melissa Haire, Chad Mai, Curtis Mai, Jason Mai, Nathan Mai, Bradley Duryee, and Dustin Duryee; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Duryee; three brothers, Leo Mai, Clarence Mai and Earlin Mai; one sister, Viola Bender, and one grandson, Darren Mai.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Jon Brudvig officiating. Burial will be in Golden Belt Memorial Park with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home.
